5. Wedge

Wedge is a triangular-shaped tool used as a simple machine. It has two inclined planes attached to each other forming a sharp edge. It is used to split things apart. Wedge is the first simple machine known to be used by human beings for hunting. Examples

A knife used to cut meat and vegetables. An axe used to cut trees.

6. Screw

It is the last of the simple machines

invented. Screw converts rotational

motion to linear motion. It consists of a cylinder with continuous helical grooves around the outside. Most screws when rotated clockwise move forward and move backward when rotated

anticlockwise. Screws are used to hold objects together.

Examples

Light bulbs use screw to clasp themselves to the holder.

Lids of jars use screw to tighten

themselves to the jars.

The See-Saw Model The see-saw model consists of a long beam with two seats on either side. The center of the beam is attached loosely to a fixed column. The see-saw can rock on either side based on the load and effort on the seats. A motor can be added for automatic rocking.
